February 2026 · 4 min read
Thinking about leaving Bluesky? Deleting your account is permanent and takes less than two minutes. Before you do, here is exactly what happens to your data and a few alternatives worth considering.
Before You Delete
Account deletion on Bluesky is permanent. There is no recovery, deactivation, or waiting period. Once you confirm, your profile, posts, follows, and likes are removed from the network.
- · Save any content you want to keep. Download or copy any posts you wrote if you want to archive them before deleting.
- · Consider just logging out. If you are taking a break, you do not need to delete. Simply sign out of the app and come back whenever you like.
- · Followers cannot be exported. There is currently no built-in way to export your follower or following list before deleting.

In the Settings menu, tap Account.
Tap "Delete Account"
Scroll to the bottom of the Account settings page and tap Delete Account. Bluesky will display a warning explaining that deletion is irreversible.

What Happens to Your Data
Bluesky is built on the AT Protocol, a decentralized framework. When you delete your account, your posts and profile are removed from the Bluesky network. However, because the AT Protocol allows other services to index and mirror content, some third-party platforms may retain a cached copy of your public posts for a period of time before the deletion propagates fully.
Your email address is released after deletion, so you can use it to create a new Bluesky account in the future.
Alternatives to Deleting
If you are not sure you want to leave permanently, there are lighter options:
- · Just log out. Your account is preserved but inaccessible until you sign back in. No time limit.
- · Make your account private. You can limit who can follow you and interact with your posts through Bluesky's privacy settings.
- · Delete individual posts. If specific content is the concern, you can delete posts one at a time from your profile without removing the account.
- · Uninstall the app. Removing the app from your device stops notifications entirely while keeping your account intact for later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a new Bluesky account with the same email after deleting?
Yes. After deletion, the email address is released and you can register a new account with it.
Can I reclaim my old handle after deleting?
Custom domain handles (such as yourname.com) can be reused since you control the domain. Default bsky.social handles may become available for others to claim after deletion, so you cannot guarantee getting the same one back.
What if I do not have access to my password?
You need your password to confirm account deletion. If you have forgotten it, reset your password first (go to the Bluesky login screen and tap Forgot password?), then return to delete the account.
