What Is a Bluesky App Password? (And How to Create One)

February 2026 · 4 min read

When you connect a third-party tool to your Bluesky account, it asks for your password. But giving out your real password is risky. That's where App Passwords come in: a safer way to let apps access your account without ever touching your main credentials.

What Is a Bluesky App Password?

An App Password is a unique, randomly generated password you create specifically for one app or service. It works just like your regular password for logging in, but with an important difference: it cannot be used to change your main password, email address, or account settings.

You can create as many App Passwords as you need, one for each tool you use. If anything goes wrong with one app, you revoke just that password. Your main account stays untouched.

Good to know: longer.blue uses App Passwords to save and publish your posts. Your main Bluesky password is never requested or stored.

How to Create a Bluesky App Password

1

Open Bluesky Settings

Go to bsky.app or open the Bluesky mobile app. Tap your avatar or profile icon, then tap Settings.

2

Find App Passwords

In Settings, scroll to the Privacy and Security section and tap App Passwords.

3

Add a new App Password

Tap Add App Password. Give it a name you will recognize, such as the app you plan to use it with. Using a descriptive name like "longer.blue" makes it easy to find and revoke later if needed.

4

Copy the generated password

Bluesky generates a password in the format xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx. Copy it immediately. This is the only time you will see it.

5

Use it in the third-party app

Paste the App Password into the password field of the app you are connecting. Use your regular Bluesky handle (for example yourname.bsky.social) as the username.

Why App Passwords Are Worth Using

  • · Your main password stays private. Third-party apps only get the App Password, never your real one.
  • · Revoke any time. If you stop using an app, revoke its password from Settings. No need to change your main password.
  • · Limited access. App Passwords cannot modify your email, password, or core account settings. The damage from a compromised App Password is contained.
  • · One per app. Creating a separate App Password for each tool keeps your access organized and easy to audit.
