I will forever remember the early morning hours of Nov 9th, 2016. I had stayed awake, still in shock and disbelief at the realization that our country as we knew it had just taken it's final breath.I had been watching the election count for several hours now and it had come to it's conclusion. I saw the unbelievable look of sadness on people's faces as they realized a takeover of our country had just occurred.A man, wholly unfit to serve our country as commander-in -chief was claiming victory. As I saw the parade of people that were waiting in the wings, getting introduced, as they walked up to the new President-elect, only minutes after the loud chant of "Lock Her Up"! ,my heart sank with sadness and despair. Not because my candidate lost, but because I was withnessing a " victory" celebration that had the appearance and overall feeling of something more sinister. With the echo of "Lock her up" still hanging in the air, and cries of the crowd telling the Democrats to "go home!" a feeling of dread washed over me. Never in all my years had I seen anything like it in our country. A blood thirsty crowd, booing those that did not vote for their choice and asking to jail the opponent. What country did I live in? Was this real?.I wondered as I watched,if this fervor was what the crowds felt when the Christians were thrown to the lions, when the witches were burnt at the stake, a fervor fed by hate and fear and lies. There, at the podium was a man who stood for everything our country IS NOT about, applauding his family as they came and presented themselves. The unsuspecting crowd cheered on, seemingly unaware they were cheering on not only their demise, but also the demise of those of us who were , by the very choice of these people who voted for him, swept into their new world . It was not a victory chant, but rather a cry of victory, ridicule and smugness. As the family crowded up to the podium, almost as if they couldn't WAIT to claim their prize, their latest and shiny new toy, I could see, as they walked up that this was what their life of entitlement had groomed them to anticipate. What I saw were vultures, coming in to to feed off our democracy, our freedom, They had been waiting there all along, confident that this was what life was all about, what life had ALWAYS been about. That Nov 9th, I saw a coup unfolding and I hung my head in sadness.
