While sexuality was obviously a major theme throughout, the one that I felt the strongest was in relation to being on the Asexual spectrum. There are so many places on it one can find themself, and being in a weird middle ground between having feelings for someone, while feeling little to nothing when it comes to sex can make you feel like such an outsider, even in a relationship. Yes you care about them, and with some people you do feel rare fleeting moments of libido but it isn’t the same as what others feel. Taking it a step further are the themes surrounding kink, particularly kinks that are “unrealistic”, out there, in some cases not even possibly in the real world. It already feels weird to not be interested in things like sex, but to then turn around and be interested in something like that? The absurdity, it’s comedic, which we see a lot of in this film. These are things that can sometimes only be expressed and engaged with through wild contrived scenarios, and roleplay, due to their outlandish nature. (I also really liked the importance the film placed on consent when engaging in these scenarios with others, and how you shouldn’t worry, they aren’t real) It sometimes feels impossible for anyone who isn’t also into these strange things to even comprehend how you feel. Trying to explain it to others will make you look like a crazy person! But, there are people like you. If you can find them, hold onto them. The communities I have seen surrounding weird niches that make no sense to people not into them are always so tight knit, and care for one another. If someone refuses to accept or understand you, you don’t need them, you can find those who will. The most bliss you will ever feel is when you are free to be your own weird self with someone who gets it, no matter who might be judging. There are so many specific details that pushed it even more and more to feeling like a 1-1 mirror image of my life and experiences but the core theme I saw is what I really wanted to talk about.
