FIRST CLASS GREEDY ASS, ALTMAN: “OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says it’s “quite terrible” for people to have large amounts of memory in their home computers, arguing it should go to AI data centers instead. “From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time,” Altman said in an interview with the YouTube channel Cheeky Pint. “You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you’re trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment.” His comments come amid a global memory shortage driven largely by AI companies buying up chips, which has sent prices for RAM and graphics cards soaring for everyday consumers. Tom’s Hardware notes that Altman is essentially defending OpenAI’s business model, which depends on people paying to use AI in the cloud rather than running it for free on their own machines. The remarks have sparked a backlash from tech enthusiasts who fear a future where people no longer own their hardware and instead rent everything from big tech companies.”. via Aaron Parnas newsletter
