~ Two cents a bottle  Better than a paper route A boy's first hustle ~ There is something both tender and damning about the memory compressed into those three lines. Two cents a bottle — it sounds almost laughable now, the arithmetic of a small rebellion. But do the math the way a hungry teenage boy does, killing time between panel jobs and the smell of Bondo drying, and it starts to add up. Not just in nickels, but in something harder to name. The body shop was his first real footing in the world of men — grease-stained, loud, smelling of acetone and cigarette smoke. And yet even here, at the threshold of earning, the instinct wasn't entirely honest. The bottles sweating beside the Coke machine weren't his. He knew that. He took them anyway. There's no dressing it up. But understanding a thing means sitting with its roots. A father who drank — not quietly, but in the way that reorganizes a household around one man's thirst — has a particular relationship with money. He holds it like a fist. Every dollar becomes a small act of control, doled out or withheld on a whim that smells of rye whiskey. A boy who grows up reaching learns early that waiting to be given something is a fool's errand. You find another way. So he found another way. After finding the paper too exposed, too dependent on weather and customers and goodwill, the bottles were already there. Unclaimed, or so he told himself. The machine didn't notice. The boss was under a chassis. The poet looking back doesn't fully excuse the boy. But he understands him — that restless, resourceful, slightly crooked kid who learned too young that the world had a tight fist, and decided his would stay open. ~ This observation was made with the assistance of claude.ai. ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To support me, visit: https://tinyurl.com/andy-rukes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
