The scientists sought about a month ago to warn clinicians through the CDC’s Health Alert Network, which normally needs sign-off from the director’s office, as doctors began seeing unvaccinated pregnant women with measles for the first time in decades. Measles in pregnancy can cause pneumonia and death in the mother, miscarriage, premature birth, and congenital measles in newborns, and many doctors have little experience treating it. Scientists then turned to a slower internal journal, and with other vaccine reports already being delayed, they are now considering publishing in an outside journal to avoid “political interference,” sources told the Post. The U.S. has recorded 4,852 measles cases this year, a 35-year high, and Pennsylvania alone has reported 77 pregnant women with measles since its outbreak began in April. The delay comes as the CDC under Health Secretary Robert F.
