LISTENING TO THE DEAD Daily Astrology Sat 31st Oct Today is Samhain, when the veils between this world and the Otherworld are thin. It is a liminal time, the shift inwards from autumn to winter. It is also Halloween, when the holy people of the later Christian tradition are more present. Either way, the veils really are thinner. Traditions have objective power that build over time. The sky can tell us in what way the veils are thin today. Mars conjunct Jupiter in Leo. These are the great ancestors of the past, a broad interpretation of the Christian meaning. Nowadays we like to take them down for being dead white males, or for having faults. Insodoing, we destroy ourselves, for who we are rests on the traditions of the past. So take time to be appreciative of the inspirational figures of the past. We also have Mercury retrograde in Scorpio trine to Moon in Cancer. Perfect for feeling the presence of your relatives who have moved on from this great dream of life. Mercury in Scorpio is at ease with death, retrograde moves it closer to the Otherworld, and Moon in Cancer has a strong feeling for family. Everyone is impossible in one way or another in this life. But after they die, they soften as they remember that they are everything, there is no separate self to build and protect. There is no reason to suppose that they are suddenly abounding in wisdom, why would they be, but they are closer to the true nature of things and a lot of the nonsense drops away. Listen to them today. They are onside with you, sympathetic to your attempts to live your life, and may show up to help you cross over when it is your time to die. Sir Winston Churchill didn't think death was important. It is as natural to die as to be born, as Francis Bacon said. Being 'dead' is by far the more normal state of affairs. Today may show you that this world and the Otherworld, life and death, are not different things. Halloween, or Samhain, reminds us of the greater context in which this dream of life, a bubble that can pop at any moment, takes place, and the intimate connection we have with everything. 'Hallow' means 'holy'. Let us not reject this Christian overlay in our rush to be pagan. For early peoples, the whole world was sacred, and today is a time for that remembrance, because we busy, preoccupied humans easily forget.
