THE 9/11 ANNIVERSARY Daily Astrology Fri 11th Sept New Moon in Virgo. One cannot ignore today's symbolism, being the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Virgo is associated with healing, with purification, the harvest maiden separating the wheat from the chaff. A New Moon is a beginning. A day to let go of whatever pains you from the past. Allow the mysterious alchemy of Virgo, as it digests and purifies experience, to do its work. The emphasis today is on major tragedies and losses, and quietly letting them recede. Life can be brutal, but time and the natural digestive process of Virgo is the great healer. Death is a part of life, and it isn't a big deal. It is utterly normal, it is happening by the thousand every minute. It is a basic Buddhist teaching that suffering has, at its root, a misunderstanding of the nature of reality. Tragic events can, over time, bring us closer to an acceptance of reality. That is Virgo's healing: the inner joy of the sign, when it is no longer buffeted by events, but sees them for what they are. What happened in America was a huge deal for the country, and the whole world was required to pay attention. But it would not have been such a huge deal in many other countries. America was not used to being attacked. It was naive, and was outraged. Sympathy is the natural response, whatever the country. But the event also points to the way loss and tragedy can force us to grow up. Not that one would wish it on anyone. Nowadays we speak the language of wound and trauma, which I have deliberately avoided, for it easily places us in the role of the victim of life's unfairness. Never be the victim, that is not the way to healing. Healing is not correcting something that has gone wrong: the word means becoming whole, it means using suffering to move forward, to gain insight, to make peace with reality. I don't mean any of this to sound harsh. Sensitivity and compassion, in which Virgo abounds, are needed at all times. Events may knock us sideways, but with the tender ministrations of Virgo, we are eventually able to stand up straight again, and see the world through different eyes.
