Dear Senator Durbin, Buried in House Republicans’ 1000-page Billionaire Budget bill is a provision, Section 70302, that could gut the power of our federal courts and give Trump something no other president has had: the power to ignore the law and judicial orders. Right now, if a government official ignores a court order, a judge can hold them in contempt, imposing fines, sanctions, and even jail time until they comply. Should this provision pass, Trump could potentially defy court orders without consequences. Some Senate Republicans are considering replacing this “no contempt clause” with their own dangerous provision to limit the power of the courts to stop Trump’s illegal or unconstitutional actions in the future. Whenever the "Big, beautiful bill" is mentioned in the news, the main topic of it is always about Medicaid. I wholeheartedly agree that it is very important. However, Section 70302 is just as important. I hope you will do everything you can to remove that section from the bill. Regards, David Piekarczyk
