SACRED MYTHOLOGIES Daily Astrology Fri 9th Oct. The Moon in Libra opposes Neptune in Aries. Let us consider Neptune. He is not a personal planet, and not usually interpreted except in relation to them. He is our metaphysical home, the ocean that has no boundaries. The best sort of life is one lived close to the remembrance of that home. This is what faith is: the feeling of being close to and cared for by that central and mysterious fount of existence. As astrologers, we also have the ancient Greek Chaos, out of which emerged the world and its Olympian gods. We are both pantheists (the Spirit is everywhere) and polytheists (divinity has multiple forms.) The Catholic church with its saints is similar. It is the natural state of affairs for indigenous religions. Neptune can be fierce if you offend him - if you do not live from your callings. You will, like Odysseus, find yourself wandering uprooted and homeless. If you heed his callings, if you have the faith and courage to live from them, then he is bountiful and infinitely loving. He is not jealous: he offers you a pantheon of gods and goddesses to live by. Neptune has recently entered Aries, supercharged by a conjunction to Saturn, who enables these divine energies to manifest here on earth. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, so he wants a fresh start. We need new mythologies. You could trace the collapse of the old Christian mythology from the last time Neptune entered Aries, in the 1860s. The tower has been collapsing for 160 years: it is Matthew Arnold's "long withdrawing roar", published in 1867, of the sea of faith which once engirdled the earth. These things cannot be consciously constructed: we have to leave Neptune to do his work. But what mythologies carry the sacred for you? Take them seriously, water them. Then you will have a deep centre to your life. For me, the indigenous reality of the natural world being inspirited and sacred, that we belong to her and are cared for by her, is foundational. And then I have the Greek pantheon as vital, living presences, that has come to me through many years of astrology. Somewhere in it too is the Christian mythology, for that has depth in our culture, but it is as an overlay on the more fundamental indigenous mythology, that keeps nature sacred. The Moon, as the fastest moving planet, is the activator of the zodiac. Today it is activating Neptune from the sign of Libra, pointing to the balance to be found once we have the sacred centre, in the form of the mythologies that speak to us, in place.
