# What Happened to My X Account — And Why I'm Now on Bluesky **This is going to be a lengthy post, but I believe it's important information that deserves to be shared.** It concerns what happened to my longtime X (formerly Twitter) account, why I believe it may have been deliberately sabotaged for political reasons, and why I've begun rebuilding my presence here on Bluesky. More importantly, it concerns something that could potentially happen to anyone who uses social media to express political opinions. ### A Political Voice Suddenly Silenced I've been active on Twitter/X for years. My personal account, known as BigBearSteve, had accumulated several thousand followers, and my posts frequently generated comments, reposts, and discussion. I make no secret of my politics. I'm strongly opposed to Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, and my account reflected those views. I regularly posted political commentary and shared information from prominent left-leaning political accounts. Then, approximately three weeks before the November 3, 2026, midterm election, something extraordinary happened. **Someone hijacked my account.** The intruder changed my username, replaced my profile photo, and altered my profile information. My original account identity disappeared, although my familiar banner remained. The new identity was a woman calling herself "Emma," using the handle @EmmaGirl351. Whether that person actually exists, I have no idea. But what happened next is what really caught my attention. ### The Account Was Almost Immediately Suspended After taking control of my account, the intruder made a post that apparently triggered X's enforcement system. The account was suspended. Think about that for a moment. Someone gained unauthorized access to an established account with thousands of followers, changed its identity, and then engaged in activity that resulted in the account being shut down. There was no apparent attempt to use my audience to sell products, promote a scam, solicit money, or carry out the kinds of activities commonly associated with account hijacking. Instead, the most consequential action was one that made the account unusable. And the consequences went considerably further. ### My Posts, Followers, and Political Reach Because the account's identity had been changed and the account was suspended, my original posts became inaccessible or appeared as blank entries and dead links. My reposts were now attributed to the hijacker's account rather than mine. Once that account was suspended, people attempting to view some of those reposts encountered notices indicating that the posting account had been suspended. The account also began displaying zero followers and zero accounts followed. My media appeared to have disappeared as well. I am still trying to determine whether those records were actually deleted or are simply being hidden because of the suspension. But whatever the technical explanation, the practical result was devastating. **Years of political commentary, thousands of connections, and the ability to communicate with my established audience were suddenly taken away.** And I could do virtually nothing about it. ### Why I Believe This May Have Been Politically Motivated Here's the question I keep coming back to: **Why would someone go to the trouble of hijacking an established account simply to get it suspended?** The timing is certainly interesting. It happened just weeks before a major national election, at a time when political discussion and the exchange of information are particularly important. The account was openly anti-Trump, regularly shared opposition commentary, and had an established audience. It is entirely possible that someone specifically wanted that voice removed from the conversation. It is also possible that this was part of a broader effort to interfere with politically outspoken accounts. I have wondered whether organized political disinformation operations, including foreign influence networks, could be involved. But there is no evidence available to me identifying the attacker or connecting the takeover to any particular organization or government. I cannot prove the political motivation. **Nevertheless, based on the sequence of events, the nature of my account, and the timing, I personally believe that deliberately silencing my political voice is a serious possibility.** That is my interpretation, and I am stating it as such. If reliable evidence eventually establishes a different explanation, I will acknowledge that. ### What Has X Done About It? Unfortunately, very little that has helped me. I reported the hijacking and appealed the suspension, explaining that the activity triggering the suspension occurred after someone else had taken control of my account. **X denied my appeal.** That left me in the extraordinary position of being punished for actions taken by someone who had stolen my account. I've pursued additional support channels and have now submitted a formal request for my account data, including whatever records X still retains of my posts, followers, and accounts I followed. I'm hoping that information will help me recover my audience, even if X refuses to restore the original account. I have also been investigating whether I can obtain another review of the suspension. I don't know whether I'll ever get the account back. And I have serious questions about an enforcement system that can leave the legitimate owner of a hijacked account unable to recover it. ### Why I'm Now on Bluesky Rather than simply disappear from the conversation, I've decided to become more active here. I've brought over my familiar banner, and I'll continue posting my thoughts, sharing information, engaging in political discussion, and occasionally putting up the Good Morning posts that many of you have come to recognize. I'm pleased to see people beginning to connect with me here. Already, this Bluesky account has 131 followers, and I hope more of my old friends and followers from X will find their way over. I'm not abandoning my efforts to recover my X account. But I'm also not going to allow what happened there to prevent me from expressing myself. ### A Warning to Everyone Who Speaks Out Online There is a larger reason I'm telling this story. If my account was deliberately targeted because of its political content, I doubt I would be the only person someone might try to silence. And even if my experience turns out to have been an ordinary account takeover rather than a politically motivated attack, the vulnerability it exposed is something we should all take seriously. We cannot assume that something like this could happen only on X. It could happen on Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, or virtually any other platform. Please take your account security seriously. Use strong, unique passwords. Enable two-factor authentication, preferably through an authenticator app or passkey rather than relying solely on text messages. Make sure your recovery email is secure, and be extremely cautious about unexpected login requests and suspicious links. If you notice unauthorized activity, document it immediately. And if you maintain an important online presence, consider keeping independent records of your contacts and content wherever the platform permits it. Political disagreements are part of a free society. We should be able to argue, criticize, disagree, and express strongly held opinions without fearing that someone will sabotage our accounts to silence us. ### I'm Still Here Whatever ultimately happened to my X account, I'm not going away. I'll continue speaking my mind, sharing what I believe matters, and participating in the political conversations that brought so many of us together in the first place.
