Trying to coach people, and directly tell them what they’re doing wrong will often backfire—even when the advice is good. People don’t want to feel controlled, judged, or treated like a project. They want to feel understood. Great coaching isn’t about proving that you’re right. It’s about helping someone recognize the truth without attacking their identity. Listen first. Ask better questions. Understand what they actually need. Lead by example. Deliver difficult truths with respect, timing, and emotional intelligence. You can be direct without being harsh. You can challenge someone without making them feel small. The goal isn’t to overpower people with wisdom. The goal is to communicate it so effectively that they become excited to change. That’s the next level of coaching.
