Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor by Andrew Lownie, is an apposite book for our time. It goes into great detail on how the Duke and Duchess collaborated with the Nazis at virtually every step. While both were motivated by stung vanity and self-interest, the Duke also felt some affinity for Germany through his ancestry and a fear of the spread of Communism. Fortunately, because of detailed surveillance and active moves to counter their influence, their counter-diplomacy efforts to keep the United States isolated and get the UK to seek peace with Germany and Hitler failed. The book reads rather like after all the author's research, he felt compelled to put every iota of documentation in there, but the topic is fascinating in a time when actual world leaders are seeking unjust peace with an aggressor. #booksky #treason #wwii
