What a beautiful summer day. The sun was shining, the temperature was in the mid-70s, and there was a perfect breeze in the air. I started the morning by taking Hazel for a walk, a nice way to enjoy the weather before getting the day underway. Once back home, I got some laundry running and took a trip out to BJ’s in Clay to stock up on Vitamin Water and pick up a few other odds and ends. On the way home, I stopped at Hefner’s Nursery and picked out some patio plants. After that, I grabbed lunch from The Pickle. Naturally, I ordered the Pickle Special—it wouldn’t feel right not to. I also took some time today to vote in the local primary, which felt like a worthwhile part of the day. Now I’m sitting on the back porch with Mark, relaxing under the umbrella and enjoying the breeze. Hazel has found her favorite spot, stretched out in her shade ditch, perfectly content. For a while, I just sat and watched the wind catcher spin, completely mesmerized. It was one of those rare moments where I could simply shut my brain off and be present. The leaves rustled softly in the trees, and every so often the gentle notes of our neighbor’s wind chime drifted through the air. Nothing urgent, nothing demanding attention—just the sounds of a summer afternoon and the simple comfort of being home. I plan to sit here for a while longer. Nothing urgent remains. The chores are done, the errands are finished, and the day has nowhere else it needs to go. When the sun finally dips below our neighbor’s roofline, I may pour myself a beverage and light the fire pit, letting the evening settle in the same unhurried way the afternoon has. Some days are meant for accomplishing things. Today feels like it was meant for appreciating them. It’s one of those days that reminds me how much peace can be found in the ordinary moments.
