Amongst all of the discoveries made by the fringe research organization Project ORPHEUS over the years, none were as momentous as their findings in the North Atlantic. On a lonely island far from Great Britain and seemingly uncharted by man, the expedition uncovered what seemed to be an ancient Brittonic burial ground, along with a sepulcher hidden within a forested hill near the center of the island. Once opened, the chamber contained a number of strange artifacts, including a tome of arcane lore and a long sword that remained untouched by the ages. However, the most curious breakthrough the team made was instead of a sarcophagus that laid in state in the middle of the sepulcher, there was a cylindrical tank embedded in the far wall surrounded by advanced machinery. To the team’s surprise, the tank contained the body of a young man resting within—not dead or decaying, but merely in a deep slumber. Due to the nature of their discoveries, as well as the site’s proximity to the British Isles, it was theorized that the man was King Arthur and the island itself was Avalon, both thought to be mere myths. With the aid of the government, the tank and its electronic components were carefully extracted from the sepulcher and expeditiously transported to ORPHEUS’s main laboratory for study. Though the organization and the crown believed that the stranger was the genuine article, the primary research team had reservations and worked to discover the truth of his origins. While they were able to remove him from the tank with minimal damage to the delicate machinery, the researchers could not wake the man, thanks to an ambient energy field that seemed to generate from his body. Upon washing off a layer of dead flesh, he suddenly came alive and attacked those present in a wild frenzy. Once he had subdued the last security officer in his path, the stranger fled into the nearby wilderness, taking what artifacts he could with him. Despite their best efforts and even following the trail he had left behind, ORPHEUS could not find the man again… Although he was a stranger to this bizarre new world he found himself in, the young man quickly adapted to his surroundings and became a wanderer. His efforts to remain hidden during his travels did not go unnoticed, however, as his presence got the attention of Professor Mideon Knight, a paranormal researcher of the Aldrich Society. Sparing no expense to tracking the wandering soul down, the professor attempted to bring him into protective custody, if only to better understand his unusual nature. After some persuasion from the older man’s daughter and assistant, Seele, the wanderer willingly left with the two back to the Society’s headquarters, away from ORPHEUS’s prying eyes. Conducting several interviews and experiments involving hypnosis, the Society came to learn that the stranger was not King Arthur, but instead a soldier called Wulf-Grim. Wolf, as he became affectionately known by the group, had been a member of a mystic order of knights known as the Bladesworn—warriors who challenged the forces of darkness in defense of humanity—and faced his fair share of monsters and magic. However, Wolf’s memories became muddled by the long stasis in the sepulcher; he could not recall much more about himself, or why the order had fallen in the end. He did nonetheless reveal that ever since awakening, he had been having visions of a coming battle between the Old Gods and a seemingly endless legion of demonic creatures. The Society’s inner circle was deeply troubled by what they had learned from Wolf, and yet they remained steadfast in their curiosity. They struck an accord with him; in exchange for his help in eliminating a number of supernatural threats, they would do everything in their power to restore his memories. While he was reluctant to accept at first, Wolf knew that opportunity would not come again without much direr stakes from other parties. He would join the Society as a field operative. Over the years, Wolf continued to adapt to the modern world and used his knowledge in magic and warfare to better arm the Society in their missions. Though he was content to remain an operative, a certain sense of wanderlust and a desire to find himself had led him to investigate Project ORPHEUS in secret. The organization still held much of what they had found within the Sepulchre of Dreaming, including translations of runes that had been inscribed on both him and on the chamber walls. They had revealed very little, save for a few names that got the operative’s full attention… With this new information in hand, Wolf began his quest for identity, hoping to not only find the man he once was but the source of the visions...
