Addiction is not a temporary flu or a broken arm. When you put powerful substances into the brain (particularly one that’s still growing) you aren’t just going through a phase. You are hard-wiring a completely different way of existing. You are installing a permanent operating system. Sometimes when I light the BBQ I’ll catch the scent of a burning grill. In a split second, I'm smelling the burning brillo at the end of a crackpipe. This is not a memory I’m recalling so much as it’s a physical switch that was flipped in my head years ago. It doesn't matter how long I've been clean, it still hits with the same punch even years later. Addiction is just not a simple glitch that we can just fix. I personally believe that it’s a permanent, acquired neurodivergence. Users are living with brains that have been fundamentally remapped to scan for patterns, threats, and cues that neurotypical people don't even know exist. Addicts aren't broken. They've been wired differently now and that shift is far more permanent than anyone ever wants to admit.
