Speaker Johnson, You frequently profess your deep faith in Christianity. Whether one is a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Sikh, or a follower of nearly any other faith, the central tenet remains consistent: we are called to treat our neighbors as we would like to be treated. In light of that, it is difficult to comprehend how thousands of people are now at risk of losing access to food assistance, affordable medical care, and the basic security of knowing their children will not be terrorized by out-of-control ICE agents. You have claimed that Democrats are to blame for not approving the GOP continuing resolution (CR), which would drastically cut funding for affordable healthcare. However, your party controls the House, the Senate, and the White House. While you point out that 60 votes are required in the Senate to pass the CR, and therefore suggest it is the Democrats’ responsibility to “bail you out,” I would respectfully remind you that just weeks ago the Senate altered the filibuster rules to expedite the confirmation of federal judges. You wear your Christianity on your sleeve, yet the hypocrisy here is glaring. Do the right thing: restore the Obamacare subsidies and the SNAP benefits. Otherwise, your public declarations of faith ring hollow. The teachings of Jesus, Muhammad, and other faith leaders are clear—there is only one moral path forward: to care for those in need.
