The government is asking a judge to lift an injunction blocking ICE from detaining and deporting the Maryland father, who was wrongly sent to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT mega-prison last year in what ICE admitted was an “administrative error.” Ábrego Garcia says that if he’s deported, it should be to Costa Rica, which already agreed to take him, but a former ICE official argued sending him there would be “prejudicial” because the US had invested resources negotiating with Liberia. The administration has kept pushing for Liberia even after the US signed an agreement with Costa Rica to accept deportees who can’t be returned to their home countries. A federal judge already threw out the human smuggling charges the administration brought against him after his return, finding they were meant to punish him for challenging his deportation.
