Negotiation isn’t about defeating someone, squeezing every possible dollar out of them, or walking away feeling like you outsmarted them. That might create a short-term win, but it can destroy the relationship. Real negotiation is about finding an agreement where both people receive meaningful value. Each side understands what matters to the other, communicates what it can offer, and works toward a result that genuinely benefits everyone involved. The goal is for people to feel excited—not pressured. They should believe they received excellent value—not wonder whether they were manipulated. A strong negotiation also demonstrates that someone is honest, reasonable, and good to work with. Because the negotiation isn’t only about one transaction. It’s an opportunity to build trust that can lead to referrals, future opportunities, and a lasting relationship. The best agreement is one both people feel good about honoring. Both sides understand the value. Both sides are excited about the outcome. Both sides walk away believing they won. It’s communicating value, understanding what matters to everyone involved, and creating a genuine win-win. At its highest level, negotiation is relationship-building.
