“ Survivors of major U.S. disasters are still waiting on at least $10 billion in long-term federal recovery aid. The last time the government released long-term rebuilding funds through its main disaster recovery program was for Hurricane Milton, which hit Florida in October 2024. Survivors of the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, the St. Louis tornado, and the Texas Hill Country floods have received none, because Congress must approve the money disaster by disaster and hasn’t. The program was written into law for the first time in July 2026, but no new money has been appropriated. A St. Louis tornado survivor said his insurance covered almost nothing and FEMA only helped briefly, while an Altadena resident said it’s disheartening that her own country can’t do what it has historically done for disaster survivors. Survivors have made three trips to Washington to press lawmakers for the funding.”. From Aaron Parnas newsletter
