ENTERING THE PRIMEVAL SWAMP Daily Astrology Wed 9th Sept The 12 zodiac signs are divided into 4 elements. In a way, a consideration of the elemental balance in the sky is more fundamental and more raw, closer to experience, than the signs. Fire, Earth, Air and Water, the 4 ancient elements. Or, to bring it even closer to experience: Sun, Soil, Wind and Rain. Stop and sense them, taste them even, for a moment. In the sky today, 4 planets are in Fire, 2 are in Earth, 3 are in Air and just one is in Water: Mars in Cancer. Fire is the imagination and inspiration; Earth is where we incarnate, make things real; Air is where we gain perspective and insight; and Water is feeling, emotional awakening. Water is the one to look out for today, because it is lacking, and occupied by Mars, which doesn't feel very comfortable in Cancer. Planets adapt the element they are in to human life, they civilise them. Feeling today may be quite raw and direct, definitely not for polite society, but by the same token it is powerful and potentially creative. It may come out as anger and rage, bursting out unexpectedly. Or, at its best, Mars in Cancer can be strongly caring and nurturing, will fight for the welfare of others, will dive into a river to save a dog. However it is, step back from your usual adapted and civilised self and allow the deep, raw feeling in. Enter the primeval swamp. The natural instinct is to judge and to deny and repress. Society falls apart if feelings are allowed to run out of control. It is not just animals that humans domesticate: we do it to ourselves too, and something vital gets lost. Healers and shamans and witches and maybe even some astrologers have access to these kinds of energies, which allow them to do their work. It is why we can be ambivalent about these people. They fascinate, because there is something forbidden about them. In times of stress, they may be scapegoated, blamed for everything. So today, allow yourself to go to that forbidden place of raw feeling. Anything you have been putting aside to keep the peace, to keep life comfortable, look at it, allow it to erupt. Reading this piece will in itself enable the impolite and inconvenient to move closer to the surface.
