“U.S. bankruptcy filings jumped 11% in the first nine months of 2026, with small business filings soaring 46%. Nearly 470,000 individuals and businesses filed for bankruptcy from January through September, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute. Small business filings under a special fast-track process hit 2,442, up 46% from the same period last year. Experts pointed to high borrowing costs, rising household expenses, growing consumer debt delinquencies, and a softer job market. Inflation spiked after the Iran war began in February, peaking at 4.2% in May, and remains well above where it was before the war. Large corporate bankruptcies are also running 22% above their 20-year average, with 28 filings involving companies holding more than $1 billion in assets over the past year.“.
