One of my favorite poems I've ever written. Cheeseburger Summer ******* We touch down in a whirlwind of boxes controlled chaos is order of the day taxi leading to a new place to hang the mezuzah sunshine, sunshine, always sunshine ******* filling the rooms with yellow motes heat and dust and siesta music we slump gratefully in stuffed chairs hunger drives us outward wandering streets like hounds walking a trail ******* we know it’ll be here somewhere we zero in on the place last in the beauty pageant banners on the walls, Ole Hugo! ******* marron mats on the tables kitchen radio adding its sounds to the menu blurting our order above the words of the telenovelas blaring from the corner ******* rolling our words like food on the plates lava-laden, pepper-filled pockets Dante’s beans and rice make a gulp of Jarritos better than before ******* homeward bound, we buy lunch for tomorrow from the street vendors long fragrant churros and puposas fill our bag with promise sun heading below the windows heralding the end of another day ******* later, lying in the stillness sweat-covered bodies fragrant odors still on her lips drifting off into the deserts of our dreams *******
