Stop comparing yourself to people below you and using it as an excuse to feel satisfied. “I’m doing better than most people.” So what? Most people are not your standard. Downward comparison is one of the easiest ways to protect your ego while wasting your potential. You find someone making less money, taking worse care of their body, or living with less discipline, then use their life to convince yourself that you are doing enough. But being ahead of someone else does not mean you are becoming who you were meant to be. The real question is not: “Am I doing better than them?” The real question is: “Am I living anywhere close to my own potential?” Compare yourself to the strongest, healthiest, happiest, most courageous, disciplined, loving, and successful person you could become. Compare today’s choices to that vision. Would your highest self accept your current excuses? Would that person follow your habits? Would that person be proud of how you used today? Do not look downward for comfort. Look inward for truth. Your competition is not the person struggling behind you. Your competition is the extraordinary person inside you who is still waiting to be built.
