2-3 As of today, there are about 7159 languages in the world [Ref. SIL International. Online version, below]*. Some of these languages have a gender marking or pronominal forms which could correspond to a sex-based or non-sex-based distinctions - ‘binary’ or ‘nonbinary’ distinctions. Out of the 7159 languages, we have data collected from around 257 languages which show some differentiation based on ‘male-female’ distinction; the lack of; or having no gender at all.** [Ref. WALS**, below]. Out of 257 languages, 84 languages have a ‘sex-based’ gender structure, some of which also show so much variation and not only ‘male-female’ distinction; 28 languages have a ‘non-sex based’ structure, and 145 have ‘no gender’ distinction whatsoever.
