No one ever said Josh Hawley (R-MO) had courage. After raising hopes by voting to put a war powers resolution on the floor aimed at blocking Trump from using military force in Venezuela without congressional approval, he and Todd Young (R-IN) folded under White House pressure and voted no on the final, allowing it to fail 51-50. This comes as the president actively threatens to bomb Iran and continues to saber-rattle at Denmark over Greenland, and 56% of Americans feel Trump was gone too far with his military interventions, against 8% who think he hasn’t gone far enough. Our best route to stop Trump from taking us to war against half our hemisphere, however, remains open. Congress has yet to pass the Fiscal Year 2026 defense appropriations bill, and must do so by 12:01AM on January 31st. As usual, it will need Democratic votes to get through in the Senate. Leaders like Elizabeth Warren and Chris Murphy are calling for Dems to stand firm and demand language stopping deployment of our troops to Venezuela and elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere without congressional approval. Let’s let our electeds know they have the right idea and demand they use the appropriations deadline to keep Trump from taking us to war. Source-Joe Katz
