A note on trans rights in the UK. I don't normally type stuff like this, because honestly very few people will see it, and those that follow me on here likely already feel the same way. However I saw a post recently that pointed out that cis allies showing support helped more that sometimes we realised, so here we are. I am generally loud and outspoken on things I care about - "passionate" is the word that my boss used to describe it, "didn't miss and hit the wall" is a Scots phrase that sums it up well, or "aggressively loud and fucking furious" is another. If I had typed out my feelings a week ago it would have included more incitement to violence, so I decided to wait until I calmed down and became slightly more rational. The Supreme Court ruling in the UK is fundamentally wrong, misinformed and a fucking travesty. Aside from pandering to a minority of transphobes, misogynists and homophobes, it does not line up with the scientific and biological facts surrounding gender, nor does it have any kind of basis in compassion or common decency. In no way does this ruling protect women, and in no way does it do anything other than discriminate and marginalize a subset of society that are already under constant attack. It is abundantly clear that this ruling is the culmination of an agenda has been pushed for years by politicians and wealthy transphobes as a means to divide the country, stoke division and attempt to curry favour with impressionable people that have been failed for years by successive Tory governments. There are deep seated predjudices around gender in the UK, and there are significant issues with violence directed at women. Rather than attack trans people under the guise of protecting women, the country should rally behind attacking the powerful men (and women) that are impressing unacceptable views on boys and young men. When the leaders of the country or the celebrities and influencers that saturate modern media are, at best, cheaters that normalize infidelity and a lack of basic respect towards women, or straight up rapists and sex offenders that promote toxic masculinity, it is no wonder that sexism is still a fundamental part of British culture. In the short term, I am making my views on this clear and will do everything I can to support my friends and loved ones that identify as trans or non-binary. I do not find it acceptable that old, rich pricks get to fuck around with the identity and dignity of the people I care about. Longer term, fuck the Tories, fuck the Labour party, and make transphobes afraid again.
