People completely misunderstand what I do. They think I’m passionate because I love coaching. They assume coaching is the source of my energy—as if I finally discovered the one external activity capable of making me come alive. That’s backward. Coaching doesn’t create my passion. I bring passion to coaching. If you saw me working in sales, I would bring the same energy, confidence, and intensity to sales. If I were building a company, I would attack it the same way. If I were collecting trash, I would find a way to become the most passionate trash collector alive. The job isn’t the source. I am the source. People keep searching for the perfect career that will finally make them passionate. But if you depend on an external activity to generate your internal fire, that fire disappears whenever the circumstances change. Real passion is portable. It’s an identity. It’s the energy, curiosity, confidence, creativity, and commitment you bring wherever you go. I’m not crushing coaching because I happened to find a magical profession. I’m crushing coaching because that is how I approach life. Put me somewhere else, and I’ll bring the same fire there too. Stop asking, “What am I passionate about?” Ask, “How much passion am I willing to bring to what I’m doing?”
