As I walk through the perfect night air, the acrid smoke from Chinese fireworks hangs heavy, dimming the bright lighted ribbons of chemicals streaming and sparkling through the air. The toxic smoke feels like the death of freedom, choking out the light, the harbinger of a darkness descending on what was once the land of the free and the home of the brave. I weep for what they have done, and what I know is to come. I sit with the knowing and the resolve that liberty has been laid waste, that America is a country I no longer know. The shining city on the hill was just an illusion.
