Jesus was Jewish. He quoted Jewish scripture. He discussed the Torah. He prayed to God. He spoke constantly about the Kingdom of God. He lived in a time before modern science. He wasn’t secretly a self-help teacher trapped in the first century. Trying to force him into our modern worldview is just as dishonest as forcing our modern worldview into his time. But that doesn’t settle the most important question. The real question is: “How can we carry the values and fire of Jesus into the modern world?” What was so powerful about Jesus wasn’t merely a collection of supernatural claims. It was the way he lived. He loved people society rejected. He challenged hypocrisy. He confronted corrupted authority. He gave dignity to the poor, the sick, the ashamed, and the forgotten. He taught mercy without abandoning moral courage. He valued inner transformation over public performance. He refused to measure human worth by status, wealth, or social approval. He lived with complete conviction. That is the fire we need to preserve. But preserving the fire doesn’t mean freezing every ancient belief, social structure, and explanation of reality forever. Human knowledge has evolved. We understand psychology, medicine, biology, trauma, and the universe differently now. So let’s keep the love. Keep the courage. Keep the forgiveness. Keep the service. Keep the willingness to stand against hypocrisy. Keep the conviction that a human being can transform completely and bring hope to other people. But let’s also welcome evidence, science, questions, and disagreement. Let’s stop demanding blind obedience to leaders. Let’s stop confusing mental or physical illness with spiritual weakness. Let’s understand that forgiveness does not eliminate boundaries, and unconditional love does not mean unconditional approval. Let people participate even if they are uncertain about God, miracles, or an afterlife. We don’t need to pretend Jesus belonged to the modern world. We need to identify what was timeless in him and translate it honestly for the world we actually inhabit. Don’t preserve the ancient container while losing the living message. Keep the values. Keep the transformation. Keep the fire. Then build something modern enough to carry it forward.
