I don’t practice gratitude by desperately trying to think of individual things I should appreciate. I’m not scanning my life for possessions, accomplishments, or circumstances so I can convince myself to feel grateful. Gratitude isn’t a trick I use to manufacture happiness. I’m grateful because I genuinely already have everything I ultimately wanted. What did I truly want beneath every goal, achievement, relationship, and dollar? Joy. Happiness. And I already have that. That doesn’t mean I have every external thing I’ll ever pursue. I still have enormous goals. I still want to build, create, experience, and accomplish more. But I no longer need those things to give me permission to feel complete. I already have everything I need to experience joy right now. That is why I’m grateful. Not because I’m forcing myself to appreciate a few physical things. Not because gratitude is another item on my self-improvement checklist. Not because I’m trying to trick my mind into feeling better. I’m grateful because the deepest thing I spent my life searching for is already here. My gratitude isn’t a practice. It’s the natural result of realizing that I already have everything I truly need.
