Greetings fellow travelers and bookworms. Yog here to share a couple of series that were intended for younger readers, but an adult can still enjoy. The perfect books to get your child into reading or a good ole kick in the member berries for us adults. These are titles that I feel still hold up today. The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander Is a five-book series that takes us to Prydain, a fictional setting based on Wales. We follow Taran the Assistant Pig-Keeper as he is thrust into a quest to protect Prydain from the forces of evil. As he goes, he meets Princess Eilonwy, Fflewddur Fflam the bard, and Gurgi, a creature who speaks in rhyme and loves food. They end up joining the quest to protect Prydain. The characters are well fleshed out with personality and quirks. Like Fflewddur Fflam has a magical harp that whenever he lies or exaggerates the truth the strings of his break. This ends up having him mending the instrument more than actually playing it. These books are great in my opinion. They definitely hold up. It also deserves another adaptation. I actually liked the Disney movie (The Black Cauldron), but I’ll admit it wasn’t great. The titles in this series are: Book One: The Book of Three Book Two: The Black Cauldron Book Three: The Castle of Llyr Book Four: Taran Wanderer Book Five: The High King Short Stories: The Foundling and Other Tales of Prydain You can get the five novels in a paperback box set or an omnibus edition that includes the five novels and the short stories (The one I have) Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda Is three separate series with fifteen books combined. There are also a few spin-offs, but for brevity’s sake, I’m only going to talk about the main series. We follow Lief as he sets out on a quest to restore the Belt of Deltora by finding the seven gems that complete it, forcing the Shadow Lord back to the shadow lands. Joined by an ex-palace guard named Barda. a wild girl from the Forests of Silence named Jasmine who is able to speak to trees and has two pets a raven named Kree and a small furry creature called Filli. The characters are fleshed out and I remember trying to solve the puzzles with them when I was younger. The monsters are awesome looking. Probably the initial reason most of us picked these up when the scholastic book fair was at our school. Fifteen books may seem like a big commitment, but these books aren’t The Wheel of Time. They are relatively short books that you can consume in one sitting. Deltora Quest has had anime, manga, and video game adaptations. While I would recommend the entirety of the series, I suggest reading the first eight and seeing if it’s your thing. The titles in this series are: Deltora Quest Series 1 Book One: The Forests of Silence Book Two: The Lake of Tears Book Three: City of the Rats Book Four: The Shifting Sands Book Five: Dread Mountain Book Six: The Maze of the Beast Book Seven: The Valley of the Lost Book Eight: Return to Del Deltora Quest Series 2 / Deltora Shadowlands Book One: Cavern of the Fear Book Two: The Isle of Illusion Book Three: The Shadowlands Deltora Quest Series 3 / Dragons of Deltora Book One: Dragon's Nest Book Two: Shadowgate Book Three: Isle of the Dead Book Four: The Sister of the South You can buy each title separately or buy the omnibus editions
