For everyone who ever wondered how West Virginia became so poor, or how our most damaged areas became so damaged and stayed damaged, keep an eye on Lewis and Upshur County and watch neglect happen in real time right off I-79. Our state has an alleged 370 million dollar surplus to give away to the wealthiest in tax breaks, but somehow we don’t have enough money to buy school clothes…including school clothes for kids who lost everything in a flood. Despite annual horrific flooding SOMEWHERE in the their own state, our federal Republican leaders have actively voted for the cuts to funding and staffing for the weather service, the EPA and FEMA so now… West Virginians are doing what they do, taking care of each other while leadership is doing interview after interview supporting data centers. Do they think West Virginians will be too exhausted to vote?
