Daily thoughts #8 I have some time to kill while I wait at the "wonderful" Paris airport for my connecting flight back to Prague, so it's time to reflect on the weekend. We nailed the deck selection part. Our 'team' went 37-17, which is nice. 😉 It seems quite clear that Lessons and UG Cub are the two Standard decks that are bit ahead of the rest. Personally, I prefer Lesson because I view it as being slightly ahead in the matchup, but opinions may differ. Cub is definitely easier to play. As for Stormchaser vs non Stormchaser, both Lyon and Atlanta had one copy the Otterless version. I am still not sure, which one was better for this weekend. I view it as a metagame call. I slightly underestimated how inclined people are to stick to unplayable decks (looking at you UB). If PT was in this format, I'd expect the meta to consist mostly of the two top decks, and there I'm convinced our version is better. Anyway, Lorwyn is coming. Hopefully, it shakes up the format, but the top decks are powerful so it won't be easy. Tomorrow, I will try the Bant deck that won in Atlanta, and the BG Cub deck I retweeted. Then, it's Early Access for couple days. If you have any brews you'd like me to try, please comment below or send DM. 🙏 Lastly, my results this weekend weren't good, so I was trying to reflect a bit as to why. In the last two paper tournaments (Antwerp and Lyon) my overall record was 13-15, which is embarassingly bad. Modern with Amulet was rough, as I was definitely underprepared. I could use more prep here, I had liek 6 days to pick up a completely new format. I mentioned this in my daily recap like a week ago that if my goal was to win the event, I'd prolly play UG Cub. However, getting reps with Lessons - the most complex deck to play in the format - may have been valuable experience going into the PT. I still have to learn a lot when it comes to the deck. Watching Lukas play it was clear to me, his understanding of the deck is on a higher level. I have also struggled with my sleeping schedule for the past couple weeks, coupled with my poor flight scheduling. This is something I will look into when it comes to the PT. I'm also thinking about taking a break from caffeine and come back to it when PT hits. We shall see if I have the willpower to do that. 💤 All in all, I didn't give this event 100% so the results shouldn't bother me, but they still do, and that sums up the life of a competitor. 😅 PT Richmond will be better, and now I have an extra reason to requalify, because I get to test with Lukas for PT Vegas. 💪
