Real G's don’t spend their lives speaking negatively to themselves. Think about how much energy it takes to face the world. You take risks. You meet new people. You try things you’ve never done before. You make mistakes, get rejected, learn, and go again. Why would you spend the whole time attacking yourself too? A lot of people think negative self-talk keeps them accountable. They think if they’re hard enough on themselves, they’ll finally improve. But there’s a difference between telling yourself the truth and telling yourself you’re hopeless. “I handled that badly. What can I do better next time?” is useful. “I always ruin everything. What’s wrong with me?” keeps you stuck. You can hold yourself to a high standard and still be on your own side. In fact, that’s when you need to be on your own side the most. You need a voice in your head that helps you get back up, see clearly, and take the next step. If you’re still tearing yourself down every time something goes wrong, it’s time to catch up. Pay attention to how you speak to yourself. Question the thoughts that make you smaller. Replace them with thoughts that help you take responsibility and move forward. The goal is to become someone you can count on—especially when you’re having a hard day.
