The Fifth of November Remember, remember, The fifth of November, The Gunpowder Treason and Plot; I know of no reason Why the Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot! Guy Fawkes and his companions devised a plan to destroy King and Parliament alike—threescore barrels of gunpowder laid below, meant to bring England to ruin. Yet by providence, the plot was uncovered, and Fawkes was captured, lantern and match in hand. Today, Guy Fawkes Day, or Bonfire Night, is celebrated across England as a reminder of that failed rebellion in 1605. For some, it marks the triumph of order over chaos; for others, it symbolizes the enduring spirit of resistance—echoed centuries later in modern culture, from masks to movies like V for Vendetta.
